Securing GenAI Use Requires a New Take on Data Security Governance

I was recently featured in Cybersecurity Insiders, where I examine why traditional governance models fall short in the era of Generative AI and what CISOs must do differently.

Generative AI (GenAI) is rapidly embedding itself into enterprise workflows, transforming productivity, decision-making, and competitive advantage. Yet many organizations are attempting to secure Generative AI using legacy data governance frameworks built for structured repositories, defined network perimeters, and predictable access patterns. GenAI fundamentally changes that equation. It introduces dynamic data movement, probabilistic outputs, model training dependencies, shadow AI usage, and expanded insider and third-party data exposure risks.

To secure Generative AI responsibly, CISOs and security leaders must shift from perimeter-based controls to a modern, data-centric security governance model. This requires continuous visibility into where sensitive data resides, how it flows into AI systems, who has access to it, and how AI-generated outputs may unintentionally expose confidential or regulated information. Effective GenAI security governance goes beyond compliance checklists and incorporates real-time classification, entitlement analysis, behavioral monitoring, and defensible auditability.

For executive teams, the objective is not to slow AI innovation. It is to enable secure AI adoption while protecting intellectual property, regulatory posture, and enterprise trust. Organizations that succeed in the AI era will treat data security governance as the strategic control plane for Generative AI, rather than an afterthought layered on top of model deployment.

As Generative AI becomes embedded across enterprise environments, security leaders must rethink how data governance supports innovation without increasing risk. In this article, I explore why traditional security models fall short in the GenAI era and what CISOs must prioritize to protect sensitive data while enabling responsible AI adoption.
